Knock! Knock! Knock! Knock! Who’s there? I’m your mental health. Shhhhhhhh, please don’t. People will laugh at me. They will call me mad. They would never understand what I’m going through. One sec, have you ever talked to anyone about me (mental health)? NO, right. Then how can you say people won’t understand? A few months ago, when everything in my life turned strange. I felt that nobody wanted to talk to me. Slowly, I started losing faith in the world, people, and myself. My mental health started falling apart. It was almost as if a monster was living inside of me and I didn’t dare to share this with anyone. Then I finally gathered the courage and shared all of this with a close friend. Initially, I was afraid of how to begin and if he would ever understand what I was going through. But gradually as I spoke to him, I felt lighter and to my surprise, he was empathetic about everything. See, how we feel matters to our loved ones and our family. Everyone appreciates the most powerful organ in our body is not the heart, the liver, or the brain. In fact, in today’s virtual world, it is our thoughts because our thoughts can make us sink, it can make us fly. It can make any organ in the body malfunction. For instance, why does one patient with cancer do better than another patient with same cancer? Because this physical illness was a manifestation of hidden mental anguish. The mind is a corridor of thoughts, behaviors, and actions that we can imagine. And we know there’re no blood tests to determine mental health. There is a blood test to determine the virus, antibodies, and how immune we are. There is no litmus test for mental health problems. And no vaccination will stop mental illness. The human mechanism is the most sophisticated and complex mechanism on this planet which is a consequence of a million years of evolution. Today, our inability to handle our intelligence is becoming the main problem. What happens in the world is not entirely ours. But what happens within us is entirely our business. Now, we don’t know how to handle and manage it. One in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. Nepal has an estimated 6,840 suicides annually. An estimate of 30% of the population of Nepal is suffering from psychiatric problems. Unfortunately, seeking help is even more scarce in Nepal. Despite the fact that mental health problem is one of the most prevalent health and human rights conditions in the world, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) Mental Health Gap Action Program (MHGAP), over 90 percent population who need mental health services have no access to treatment as well as there are routine and rampant cases of worst human violations targeted towards people with mental health problems In Nepal, people talk like an expert on mostly two topics, Politics, and Mental health. But we always talk about mental awareness when it is already too late for somebody. And now we made a standard response on social media, “Talk to me if you are feeling lonely”. Do you seriously think this so-called standard response is working? I know your intention is positive but what I’m trying to say is that before you go out and help out strangers, start with people you already know. Talk to your parents your friends. The symptoms of mental illness are very different for everybody. Most importantly, when you know that you can’t help somebody but they need it, encourage them to take professional help without forcing it on them. Professional help can save a life. Think about it. Lots of people deal with and manage themselves but some people require therapy. We just have to figure out which category do they belong to. We are all gifted and the gift is nothing but the amazing power of healing ourselves. Remember happiness is not constant but life is.
