The pandemic of Covid-19 has caused the world economy to exponentially deteriorate. Our country Nepal is no exception to this misfortune.
Nepal is a primarily agricultural country which also relies on cottage businesses, services and tourism to sustain its economy.
While agriculture, business and service pick up their pace after the lockdown, meanwhile tourism very specially “Mountaineering tourism” should be fostered to combat the economic fall down; because business, agriculture doesn’t result in the outcome as swift and overnight as the way tourism does.
Following points help in its justification:
a) Nepal is known as “Land of Himalayas” or “Land of Mount Everest”. So, if we are using “Land of Mountains” as our identity then it’s high time we channelize our resources and not just use it for name’s sake.
b) Nepal has glorious, enchanting mountain range. Its ethereal beauty is capable of giving one spell bounds. These naturally fulfilling mountains require neither renovation nor maintenance unlike other monuments. Therefore, more output can be yield from less input.
c) Fostering “Mountaineering tourism” unlike other sectors, require few inputs like “advertisement and accessibility” because other aspects are already set by nature.
d) After the harsh time faced by the world, people all over the world are mentally traumatized. So Nepal can be the suited destination for emotional rehabilitation and spiritual experience.
e) Also, Nepal so far has been least affected by the pandemic of Covid-19 so, the tourists will feel safe and assured to visit here.
f) “Mountaineering tourism” gets the country, exposed to the least exposed parts of Nepal; which might open doors for foreign investments, businesses, scientific experiments, research on useful herbs, and other adventurous activities.
On doing so the local people will get an opportunity to be self reliant, self sufficient resulting in higher employment opportunities and decreased foreign employment.
It is not the first time Nepal has faced economic crisis. It was hit by earthquake, flood, and economic blockade before; back then we have had international helps. But since this time the whole world is on the same page, so it would be wise to take action wisely and differently. It’s time we make the best use of all the resources we have; without exploiting them.
Henceforth, the Department of Tourism should shed light on “Mountaineering tourism” to mitigate the economic losses caused due to pandemic Covid-19.
